Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

USAID has an online education site with quite a few reproductive health courses. One of them is on female genital mutilation/cutting. Because this issue is coming up for us in a variety of clinical situations, I thought it would be helpful to post a course providing a basic overview of the clinical picture.

At the end of this course learners will be able to:
•    Define female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C), describe the different types, and understand the affected population and the reasons for the practice
•    Understand the global prevalence of FGM/C
•    Understand the socio-economic factors contributing to the prevalence rates
•    Identify the immediate and long-term health complications from FGM/C
•    Identify human rights legal instruments that can be used in advocacy efforts to eliminate FGM/C practice
•    Learn from successful country-led initiatives and case studies about the critical programmatic elements that encourage abandonment of FGM/C

The course takes approximately 90 minutes to complete and registration is required. Once you’re registered you will be directed to the course list; scroll partway down to find this offering. Along with the course is an extensive list of resources, most from the last 3 years. The course can also be printed out if completing it online is challenging.

For those of you in women’s health, particularly, there are several other interesting courses available, all free of charge. Might be worth exploring.

    is mother or father are part of this abuse and if any one of them is abusing how to
    prevent this
