Digital Stories

First, apologies for the radio silence this week. It turns out when I left DC Sunday night, my laptop didn’t. So we were just reunited late last night (big sigh of relief).

We’re all in Pittsburgh this week at the IAFN Annual Scientific Assembly, and last night, the audience was shown a short film on a digital storytelling project completed this year. It was completed as a way to share practice experiences, and look at the way our patient encounters shape us, and are shaped by our personal experiences.

If you’re going to be in Pittsburgh, please make a point of coming up and saying hello. Even better (shy readers), leave a comment letting me know you’re going, so I can look for *you*. My friends from GW Medical will also be there, FYI.

Article of Note: October Edition

Time once again for Articles of Note. All of these are from the September/October/November issues and electronic previews. As always, please keep in mind this in no way a comprehensive list; simply items that have caught my attention from a selection of peer-reviewed journals. Links lead to PubMed abstracts; from there you can choose what’s worth a.) paying for; b.) a pilgrimage to your nearest medical library; or c.) downloading via the full-text access you possibly have at your disposal. For those of you wanting the word doc, drop me a note.

Blog Reads

I was skimming through the responses to our latest giveaway post, and there were a couple themes that appeared several times. One was more on human trafficking, so I thought I’d take a moment to mention the Human Trafficking Project blog, which is a great resource on the topic.

Because I am *such* a nerd…

…I am posting this today. I know, I know–you’re thinking, Jen, all I see is Algebra (or maybe, Jen, why do you hate us today?). But trust me, scroll down, because there’s a whole biology section, and I don’t know about you, but in nursing school, things like ATP and Krebs Cycle and all that other good stuff made my head hurt. Made me want to lay my head down on the desk and cry. Because they were important, but the prof was dull as dust. However, there are some really amazing, well-taught videos here (including one on DNA), and if you’re a big nerd like me, then all I’m saying is that just maybe, you too will want to learn about electron transport chains over your reheated leftovers at lunchtime.

DV Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and you can find resources in several places (I’d recommend checking out NRCDV’s DV Awareness Project for materials and events; the President’s Proclamation can be found here). October 13th is Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day and I’ll be looking to this site to see what people are doing to commemorate it. On that day I will be giving a couple talks to some fantastic folks in Ft. Bend, TX (a couple hundred of them, actually), which I’m pretty geeked about. I always like having an official talk to deliver on days like this–it gives me an added platform to actually discuss violence as more than just a criminal justice issue.

Bullying & Suicide

It’s been a fantastic week, what with the great group we had in Wyoming for our expert testimony workshop, and the appointment of my dear friends and AEquitas partner, Doug, to the bench in Colorado. And even better, I am looking at a weekend of pure play time. Totally needed. That being said, I wanted to post this incredibly moving video, which I’m sure many of you may have already seen on Facebook.
