I know I’m not alone in saying that this heat wave that so many of us have been experiencing has been pretty brutal. While the oppressive temps seem to be breaking a bit, there hasn’t been much motivation to leave the confines of my air conditioned row house for the past week. Much of the reading I did this weekend was about weather, but there were a few FHO-type news items to draw my attention:

Probe eyes Paterno’s preference for handling problems internally (CNN)

Transition to ICD-10: Getting Started (Medscape)

A Light Approach to a Grim Issue: Suicide Prevention (NY Times)

Sexual Objectification, Part 2: The Harm (Ms. Magazine)

UW Hospital sued again over alleged improper handling of HIV disclosure (Wisconsin State Journal)

PA City Defies Court Order; Reduces Police Officers, Firefighters’ Pay To Minimum Wage (Think Progress)

U.S. High Schools Lax in Preventing Dating Abuse: Study (Yahoo Health)

Discrimination against women persists around the globe hampering development (UN Women)

And because July seems to be the month of writing, a few faves in that vein:

Pixar story rules (one version) (The Pixar Touch blog)

Elmore Leonard’s 10 Rules of Writing via Open Culture
