A Little Light Reading While I’m on Vacation

Gang, in a few hours I will be boarding a flight to my happy place, the mountains of Colorado. And I have actually taken the rest of the week off–through the holiday, in fact. So I am going to try something out here–I’m not going to work while on vacation. This is tough for me. But it would be *really* good for me to take a couple days for myself, so I will not be posting again for the rest of the week. In the meantime, you’ll find some interesting reading after the jump (most from this week). And when I return, look for a brand new Articles of Note and maybe even a new giveaway.

Basic Geriatric GYN Exam

In caring for elderly sexual assault and abuse/neglect patients, there are so many normal variants that many of us are less familiar with. There are also alterations to the exam process that may need to happen to better accommodate limitations in mobility, cognition, etc. Medscape has a nice CE offering on basic GYN exams for geriatric patients. Credits are available for both physicians and nurses and are free of charge {Physicians – maximum of 0.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™; Nurses – 0.50 ANCC Contact Hour(s) (0 contact hours are in the area of pharmacology)}.

Bullying in Schools

Massachusetts passed a comprehensive bullying law this spring in response to the suicide of a teen girl who had been bullied (Slate did a nice brief piece on it if you’re interested in the details, but don’t want to slog through the legal language). Now the Boston Globe has started a periodic series on bullying, and their 1st installment was published this weekend. It’s a pretty lengthy article; I’ll be interested to see where they take the series. As the mother of a girl child (and a tween, god help me), this is certainly a topic to which I am paying attention.

Friday Wrap-Up

It’s been lovely being at home this week. Next week, back on the road, first to celebrate NSVRC’s 10th anniversary (hope to see some of you there!) and then on to DC to get some serious work done before (dare I say it) a bit of vacation in the Colorado Rockies. Before I sign off for the weekend, an update for the SAFE Virtual Practicum from IAFN. The Update will allow you to use the Practicum in Instructor mode as a teaching tool, so I highly recommend getting the download. If you already own a copy, it’s free. Instructions after the jump:

STD Prevention Conference

The CDC has made available audio recordings from this spring’s National STD Prevention Conference. Seeing as how STDs are ALWAYS popular on this site, I thought I’d post this. There’s some interesting stuff coming down the pike, and by the looks of the lineup at the conference, several issues were covered specifically, including new surveillance data.

New Resources: Sexual Violence in Later Life & DNA Backlogs

Two new resources just released that I wanted to post today. The first is from NSVRC: Sexual Violence in Later Life Information Packet. It includes a fact sheet, technical assistance bulletin, technical assistance guide, resource list, annotated bibliography and research brief. As today happens to be World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, this is particularly fitting.

Rape on the Reservation

Hat tip to the Oregon Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force (who I am very excited to be doing some training for next month), for the link to this recent episode of Vanguard, Rape on the Reservation. “One in three Native American women will be raped in her lifetime. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller travels to Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota, where the growing sexual assault epidemic has finally escalated to murder.”

Friday Wrap-Up and Safe Terminations

So here’s the craziest thing: I am home all week next week. And I am home now. And I will be home until the 22nd–of course, then we get into some ridiculous summer travel, but that’s another post. So I am enjoying the site of my desk, though I can barely see a square inch of it for all the crap that’s collected and piled everywhere. And I’m writing like a fiend: grants, articles, book chapters. Crazy! That’s my weekend plan at this point, along with some quality time with my girl-child and just a bit of World Cup (live streaming at ESPN.com). But a couple things to note, including this upcoming webinar from Peace@Work on safe terminations. It’ll take place June 17th from 2:30-3:30 ET and is free to attend.

Articles of Note: May/June Edition

Time for May and June’s Articles of Note {so sorry to have not gotten one done last month!}. All of these are from the late April/May/June issues and electronic previews. As always, please keep in mind this in no way a comprehensive list; simply items that have caught my attention from a selection of peer-reviewed journals. Links lead to PubMed abstracts; from there you can choose what’s worth a.) paying for; b.) a pilgrimage to your nearest medical library;  or c.) downloading via the full-text access you possibly have at your disposal.

Friday Odds and Ends

Don’t forget, we have a fantastic giveaway going on right now! Just leave your comment here to enter.

Happily, I am teaching for the forensic nurses in Utah today, so it should be a pretty fantastic day. What makes it better is that I will then head straight to Moab (you’ll find me here) for a bit of hiking and general relaxation for 36 hours or so before I head up to Seattle for a day of training with WCSAP. Before I head out, though, a few odds and ends to tie up the week:

Engaging Faith Leaders

Don’t forget, we have a fantastic giveaway going on right now! Just leave your comment here to enter.

I don’t know if you’ve had the same experience in your own programs, but I have found some members of the faith community to be fantastic allies in the work we do. Whether its providing translation services for patients or informal shelter services, or simply providing another avenue for advocacy, we have continued to develop relationships with aspects of our faith community that have benefited patients significantly.

Our friends at EVAW have some new resources for their Forensic Compliance project. I know a lot of folks are struggling with this issue in their communities, so definitely check these out.
