The New Face of Abused Drugs

An interesting and concise overview on newer abused drugs over at Medscape. The slide show gives you a brief run down on what some of the newer substances, such as Spice and Khat, look like, the clinical presentation, drug screen availability and patient management information. A nice introduction if you’re looking for that sort of thing.

Don’t forget we have a new giveaway going on! Leave your answer to our question(s) by noon ET on February 29th to be eligible to win a copy of the new Entry-Level Adolescent and Adult Sexual Assault Assessment workbook.

When I ran out to grab some lunch today my radio was set to NPR. And the topic featured on Talk of the Nation? The Hidden Faces of Modern-Day Slavery. While I confess I wasn’t in love with the interviewer’s questions as a whole, the guests were pretty fascinating.

“I wish it were true that sexual violence is being overstated…”

I love that I get to work with the amazing folks at NSVRC. Pieces like this (PDF) make me feel even more warm and fuzzy about the whole Harrisburg crew. Thanks, Karen for a thoughtful and well-articulated reply to Christina Hoff Sommers editorial last month in the Washington Post. For more on the NISVS mentioned in the editorial, see posts here and here.

Ghosts of Violence

Usually this site highlights online events, since it wold be difficult to publicize every local event for our more than 500 subscribers from all over the world, not to mention other readers who find their way to FHO everyday. That being said, our good friend in Canada (and source of all things Canada here on the site) Sheila Early, sent me this link to a powerful performance by the Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada called Ghosts of Violence. I thought it would be worth putting on our main page for all of you arts lovers who may want to pry yourselves away from your computer screens for a tick.

Articles of Note: February Edition

This month’s edition has my inner nerd all aquiver–so much good stuff in the research (particularly if you take care of sexual assault patients). What can I tell you–get on over to your medical library, or fire up your online access and start reading. It’s *that* good this month (and also, I like seeing my friends’ names in print, and there’s some of that, too). As always, this isn’t meant to be a comprehensive overview of what’s out there; just the stuff that caught my eye from the late January, February and early March journals and previews.

The Interrupters on PBS

I just discovered that PBS is showing The Interrupters in its entirety on their website. It premiered last night on tv; you can check the website to see when it will air again in your area. If you aren’t familiar with the film, it specifically looks at the work of CeaseFire, an organization dedicated to preventing gun violence. I’ve heard amazing things about the film–seeing as I don’t have plans, it may be what’s happening at my house tonight…

ACOG has released their Committee Opinion on Intimate Partner Violence (abstract only), and Medscape has an overview with accompanying CME (editorial note: Come on, Medscape, no nursing CEUs for this one?). The American Academy of Neurology has also released a position statement this month, although on the broader topic of abuse and violence. You can read the full text here.

Patient-Clinician Communication: Basic Principles and Expectations

The Institute of Medicine has a 2011 publication that I thought was fascinating– Patient-Clinician Communication: Basic Principles and Expectations (PDF).  I love the rationale for specifically looking at this issue:

“Consistent and effective communication between patient and clinician has been associated in studies not only with improved patient satisfaction and safety, but also ultimately with better health outcomes, and often with lower costs. Breakdowns of communication, or disregard for patient understanding, context, and preferences, have been cited as contributors to health care disparities and other counterproductive variations in health care utilization rates. Moreover, professional ethics  in health care stress the intrinsic importance of respectful and effective communication as a core aspect of informed consent and a trusting relationship.” (p. 1, emphasis mine)
