From time to time I will feature a book aimed at developing the leadership of forensic healthcare professionals. For those of you who are trying to run programs but struggling to have your voices heard by senior hospital management, community leaders, policy makers or other disciplines– I have a book for you.

Negotiating at an Uneven Table: Developing Moral Courage in Resolving our Conflicts, by Phyllis Beck Kriteck (Jossey-Bass), “explores the process of resolving conflicts in situations where unacknowledged inequity influences disputes and their outcomes. Substantially revised and expanded, this new edition will help open minds and balance the negotiation process. Throughout the book, Kritek challenges traditional approaches to dealing with inequities at the negotiation table and offers alternatives for reframing the process.” This book was named Conflict Resolution Book of the Year by the Association of American Law Schools.

Explosions and Blast Injuries: A Primer for Clinicians is a 1 credit on-line CE offering for nurses. This is as close to a paper-and-pen type offering as you will find online. Simply read the content and take the quiz (the materials are also printable for those of you who struggle with reading large amounts of content online).  Fee is $10.

The New York State Psychological Association publishes monthly podcasts, which are available on their blog. This offering has a decidedly forensic focus: Trauma in Children: How It Starts, How It Progresses, and How to Get It to Stop.

The International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) is “an international membership organization comprised of forensic nurses working around the world and other professionals who support and compliment the work of forensic nursing.” This week, IAFN unveiled their new online CE site, which will allow members to purchase continuing education units and track their earned CEUs through the site. Non-members can also access content, although in a more limited manner.

While there is a fee for the majority of content (you actually earn continuing education units, so it’s a good use of your $$$), you can currently access the keynote speech from the 2008 Annual Scientific Assembly, “The Unconscionable Weapons of War” by Stephen Lewis, at no cost.
