A Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure in Forensic Settings

IPSCAN (in conjunction with APSAC) has a video journal club now available for viewing. A Meta-Analysis of the Prevalence of Child Sexual Abuse Disclosure in Forensic Settings (FULL TEXT) was APSAC’s outstanding research article of the year and is the focus of this video session:

Authors Sheri Madigan, Corry Azzopardi, and Rachel Eirich discuss their comprehensive meta-analysis of the research on sexual abuse disclosure during forensic interviews with children. Using a large sample of 45 studies and more than 31,000 children, the researchers found that about a third of suspected victims do not report abuse when asked, with those who are younger and male being most at risk for nondisclosure.

Bisexual Crime Victims: Least Visible, Most at Risk

Vera Institute’s National Resource Center for Reaching Victims has a webinar coming up, Bisexual Crime Victims: Least Visible, Most at Risk. This is a great topic that I’ve never seen covered as the primary focus of an educational session. The webinar will be held June 17th at 2pm ET. They generally archive their sessions so I would imagine this will be accessible after the fact. From the registration page:

It’s often said they have “the best of both worlds,” but victimization rates tell a very different story. Bisexuals make up the largest part of the LGBTQ community, yet are the most invisible and have some of the highest rates of victimization. This webinar will go over the statistics, look at some of the reasons why this population is so invisible and at-risk, and explore the long-term health implications of these facts. We will also begin to explore how the victim service field and LGBTQ advocates can begin to better respond to this population’s unique needs.

Register here.

Articles of Note: May/June 2019 Edition

Time once again for Articles of Note, our (almost) monthly romp through the peer-reviewed literature in search of all things new and/or useful to clinical practice, public policy, and testimony. As you may have noticed, I didn’t make one happen in May, so this month’s combined is pretty lengthy. There’s *a lot* here to work through, but I think it’s worth it. Some familiar faces in the bunch, too. Hope you enjoy.

Since Last We Spoke, 6-3-19

A few things happening over here–one, it’s Pride month, y’all, so that’s always a fun time here in DC. Also, I had a milestone birthday this weekend, so much of my time was spent enjoying both the wife and best friend being in town to help me celebrate. But the really big news is that I am heading to Japan next week for several weeks, so FHO will be dark while I am gone. I am taking a few weeks off and I am not taking my laptop. This week will be the last week of posts until July 1st.

I’ll be heading to Williamsburg this week to teach for the Army, so I’ll have a few days out of the office. But you can expect a new Articles of Note (now that the strangulation compilation is live), as well as a couple of other goodies before we go dark for 3 weeks. And, I did manage to catch up on some reading during a serious bout of insomnia the other night–here’s what caught my eye since last we spoke:

“Commit to the process and you’ll become good enough, soon enough”. Excellent advice here.

This twitter thread is challenging but important–I encourage you to read the whole thing. It speaks volumes about the realities of our healthcare system, and mental health treatment in particular:
