The National Association of County and City Health Officials has amassed a large archive of previously offered webinars. These are available for free and require only a minimal amount of registration information. It’s Tough Being a Teen: Prevention Strategies Addressing Leading Causes of Injury and Death is a 90 minute webcast featuring presentations from national, state and local public health professionals.

Stalking and Technology
The Office of Victims of Crime is sponsoring a guest hosted web forum session on addressing technology and stalking. The forum will be January 21st at 2pm and no preregistration is required. From the OVC website: Join Michelle Garcia, Director of the National Center for Victims of Crime Stalking Resource Center, and Cindy Southworth, Founder and Director of Safety Net: The National Safe & Strategic Technology Project, for a discussion on best practices for addressing technology and stalking.
Participants can submit questions ahead of time and view answers online in real time (although it requires repeatedly refreshing the page to see updated responses), or submit questions during the hour long session, which may or may not get answered during the period of the web forum session (but may still get answered within several days of the event). There is no fee to participate in this event.

Emergency Contraception
ReachMD is an XM Satelite Radio channel geared toward medical professionals. They discuss a wide variety of topics on their show and have a website where much of the radio content is archived. This podcast is an interview by a primary care physician with Dr. Robert Hatcher (of Contraceptive Technology fame) about emergency contraception.
If you are providing emergency contraception to sexual assault patients, this is a great overview. It includes an interesting discusion about the controversy surrounding how emergency contraceptives work. The podcast also touches some on abortion and safety issues (at ~11 minute mark).
Access to the podcast is free, but does require registration with the website. Total run time: 13 minutes.
On January 22nd the Family Justice Center Alliance presents a webinar on domestic violence and sexual assault in tribal communities. The session will feature Leslie Hagen, Senior Counsel for SMART, Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs. (If you haven’t had the pleasure of working with or learning from Ms. Hagan, I cannot recommend her highly enough.) The webinar begins at 9AM Pacific Time and will last one hour. Registration is required and space is limited–click here to register. Participation requires both a phone line and internet connection–instructions for joining in will be provided once registration is completed.

Physicians can receive 2.5 ACEP Category 1 credits for completing Blunt Trauma and Evaluation Management. Cost of the course is $25, and is structured as an online article and corresponding post-test. Content is advertised as being appropriate for nurses, as well, but at this time CEUs are not available.
For those of you who have not yet heard, the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination Virtual Practicum is available from IAFN. The DVD itself is only $25; if you would like to purchase CEUs for it, as well (12.5 awarded at completion), the cost is $90 (price includes DVD). Because more than one user is able to complete the practicum on a single DVD, members of IAFN can buy CEUs alone; however they must contact the IAFN home office to do so (410-626-7805). CMEs are also available for physicians (12) through Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center for an additional $60.
For those of you who teach sexual assault content, such as SANE-SART courses, this is also an excellent tool for supplementing lectures and adding additional content (such as survivors’ voices) into the offering.
E-leaRN Online is offering 3.6 CEUs for completion of it’s onine offering, Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence: Recognition, Intervention and Prevention. This course meets the Kentucky state requirements for domestic violence continuing education (nurses from all states are eligible, however).
Format is online article followed by a test. Cost for the course is $25.
The American Nurses Association is offering 1.67 CEUs for its offering, The Impact of Disasters on Nurse Responders. Members can purchase the credits for $15 (nonmembers pay $20). “This module is designed to discuss the impact of natural disasters on nurse responders/providers and to identify interventions to help them overcome any stress/anxiety symptoms they may experience.”
Dr. Laura Mosqueda, Director of Geriatrics and Professor of Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, is a leader in the area of clinical identification and response to elder abuse. She is a frequent lecturer on the topic and I have personally been very impressed with both her presentations and publications (particularly her work on bruising in the elderly).

Intimate Partner Violence and Illness
In this 8:22 minute podcast from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Michele Black, a CDC researcher, discusses the link between IPV and illness. The podcast highlights a recent CDC study and provides information about several CDC initiatives and other resources.
My goal with this site is to provide useful, accessible and relevant content to the readers of Forensic Healthcare Online (and with almost 500 hits in our 5 days of existence and many email subscribers already receiving updates I know you’re out there). So consider this a plea to give something back to your community of forensic professionals while strengthening the quality of this site: please use the comments section of entries to provide feedback about the educational offering featured or make suggestions about creative ways to use them. I had hoped to add a rating system to make reviewing much simpler, but sadly that won’t be possible at this juncture. For now, we will have to rely on old-fashioned words instead. For those of you who are trying to run programs but struggling to have your voices heard by senior hospital management, community leaders, policy makers or other disciplines– I have a book for you.
Negotiating at an Uneven Table: Developing Moral Courage in Resolving our Conflicts, by Phyllis Beck Kriteck (Jossey-Bass), “explores the process of resolving conflicts in situations where unacknowledged inequity influences disputes and their outcomes. Substantially revised and expanded, this new edition will help open minds and balance the negotiation process. Throughout the book, Kritek challenges traditional approaches to dealing with inequities at the negotiation table and offers alternatives for reframing the process.” This book was named Conflict Resolution Book of the Year by the Association of American Law Schools.

The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) offers its members one category 1 ACEP CME for completing a quiz after reading the online article, Management of Taser Injuries. Upon completion of the article, the reader will be able to:
- Explain how the TASER works.
- Discuss the evaluation of patients who have been subjected to a TASER discharge.
- Describe the technique for TASER barb removal.
The CME offer appears to be limited to ACEP members, although the content itself is accessible to anyone who visits the site and is available in a printer-friendly format.

The Child Trauma Academy offers several free online courses on a variety of topics, including one that people frequently seem to be searching for: secondary (or vicarious) trauma. The Cost of Caring: Secondary Traumatic Stress and the Impact of Working with High-Risk Children and Families uses slides and narrative content, including case studies, broken into 4 lessons:
- Introduction to secondary trauma
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders and secondary trauma
- Self-care strategies for combating secondary trauma
- Finding resources and getting involved
Each lesson includes as assignment or quiz: some of these might be excellent jumping off points for conversation at staff meetings or team retreats (just a thought).

The Family Violence Prevention Fund partnered with Medscape to provide a free 1-hour continuing education activity on screening for intimate partner violence. This link will take you to the summary page, which also provides information on how to order the free Screen to End Abuse video.
In order to access the Medscape CE activity (nursing and medicine units awarded), users must first create a free log-in. Be aware that the actual title of the activity is Domestic Violence and Your Patient’s Health: Asking the Right Questions. If you do a search on the general Medscape site, however, this title will not appear; it can only be found on the MedscapeCME section of the site.
