That’s Not Cool Campaign Tools Website

Prevention Connection is hosting a webinar on the That’s Not Cool campaign and their new Campaign Tools site. “That’s Not Cool focuses on preventing controlling or abusive behavior occurring within the digital universe – online, via cellphone, etc. – and encourages teens to draw their own lines about what is, or is not, acceptable relationship behavior. Since the January 2009 campaign launch, That’s Not Cool has engaged hundreds of thousands of teens in teen dating abuse prevention, both online and on-the-ground.”

In My Inbox: Threats in the ED & This Emotional Life

This morning when I booted up my email I found two great things to share. The first is a fantastic blog entry over at Chief Complaint (the Medscape ED Physician’s blog). It briefly discusses an encounter with a patient who threatens to kill an ED nurse (among other unpleasant things), and asks the questions: “Is the emergency department a criminal-free zone?  Perhaps once an individual crosses the ED entryway, society’s laws regarding physical assault and homicidal threats no longer apply?” It’s a great read, but as with all Medscape offerings, you must register for the site to access it. Thanks, Kim for the tip!

Books: To Buy and To Giveaway

Donations and supplies are still desperately needed for Haiti. Please consider making a donation to Partners in Health at the FHO contribution site: http://act.pih.org/page/outreach/view/haitiearthquake/FHO. We’re so close to our goal!

About once a week someone emails me to ask what’s on my bookshelf. So I’ve added a widget in the lefthand righthand nav that links to some of my essentials over at my new FHO store on Amazon. It’s broken into categories, so if you’re interested, you can see what’s on my clinic shelf, and you can see the geeky business and presentation titles I love, too. I’ll make it a point to keep the store updated as new stuff comes my way.

Join Me in Supporting PIH

I know that I am late to post something about Haiti, but with the reports looking bleaker and bleaker, I figured I’m not too late. Please join me in showing your support through a contribution to Partners in Health, a group providing critical medical care in Haiti. I have pledged to raise $500 through the site: to put this number in perspective, if every regular reader donated $1, we’d reach our goal in a day (and then some). Please visit the FHO contribution site to make your donation: http://act.pih.org/page/outreach/view/haitiearthquake/FHO.

Weekly Wrap-Up @ the Sustainability Blog

I’ve been remiss in keeping the sustainability site stocked with new posts. My travel schedule as such has meant only a couple posts over the past 2 weeks. So today’s wrap-up is a couple weeks of content, which sadly doesn’t amount to a ton of info. But what’s there I really like:

  • Meeting ground rules, something I’m a fan of. In my next life I am going to be a meeting consultant and teach people how to stop wasting people’s time. My dad once told me that the best meetings have no chairs, and I’m inclined to agree.
  • Compassionate leadership, because there’s no rule that says we have to eat our young in nursing…

I’m attempting to make my way home from Dallas today, so feel free to make a small offering to the travel gods on my behalf. For those of you with a 3-day weekend (not me–I’m on call Monday) I hope you take advantage of that extra day off and do something fabulous with your time. For the rest of us, well, a weekend’s worth of downtime still sounds pretty good. Hope it’s a great one!

Health Care Guidelines for Sexual Assault Patients

I love when things like this show up in my in-box (thanks, Kim!). Virginia has released a new document for healthcare providers: Virginia’s Healthcare Response to Sexual Assault Guidelines for the Acute Care of Adult and Post-Pubertal Adolescent Sexual Assault Patients. I am slowly (sloooowly) working my way through this document, but I am heartened to see such a focused document.

Management of Concussion/Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

The United States VA/DoD have developed new guidelines for managing concussion and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Whether as combat injuries or resulting from assaults or MVAs, this is an issue we’re seeing pretty regularly. Medscape is offering a free CE/CME on the new guidelines; maximum of 0.25 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™ for physicians, 0.50 ANCC Contact Hour(s) for nurses.

Violence in the Workplace Roundtable

January 20th, EmployeeScreenIQ is hosting an interactive roundtable discussion via webinar on violence in the workplace. The session will be held from 2-3pm ET. Preregistration is required.

I keep putting this topic up on the site because I think it’s one area where forensic clinicians can really push our institutions to be accountable and proactive in creating policies on this issue. And when we look at the Spectrum of Prevention, it’s a great place for us to participate in the process (Changing Organizational Practices).

DV & Animal Cruelty

I am stranded at the CLE airport, where power went out 9 hours ago and has only just been restored. Needless to say, it’s chaos here, and the flight I was supposed to get on to go to Dallas has been cancelled. I’ve allegedly been rebooked for later tonight, so while I hang out to see whether I pissed off the travel gods that badly, I figured I’d get a post up.

Victim Intimidation

I had the privilege of attending a focus group on victim intimidation with predominantly law enforcement professionals yesterday. As the only healthcare provider in the room, I was trying to impress upon the group that clinicians have a stake in victim intimidation, and that the healthcare implications are significant. Although people most often think of victim intimidation in organized crime and gang cases, we see it more often in DV, sexual assault, child abuse, and even elder abuse cases. Which leads us to this post, because I’m interested in a couple things:

Happy One Year Anniversary, FHO!

That’s right–January 6th is our one year anniversary. And what do we have to show for ourselves? More than 400 posts, tens of thousands of visitors, and a global community of like-minded professionals. And what am I doing on this momentous occasion? I’m celebrating in DC, of course. Well, not celebrating so much as sitting for hours in a windowless conference room before enduring an endless rush hour security line at Reagan, which will allow me to make my way to Charlotte for a connection to Montgomery, Alabama, where I will spend 18 quality hours at Maxwell AFB before heading back to the snowy wonderland that is the CLE. Whew–can’t you feel the magic?

Seriously, thanks for supporting the work here at FHO. I love that you guys keep coming back.

That is all…carry on.

Articles of Note: January Edition

Time once again for a run down of some of the new and noteworthy articles in the current literature. All of these (but one) are from the December/January issues. As always, please keep in mind this in no way a comprehensive list; simply items that have caught my attention from a selection of peer-reviewed journals. Links lead to PubMed or publisher abstracts; from there you can choose what’s worth a.) paying for; b.) a pilgrimage to your nearest medical library;  or c.) downloading via the full-text access you possibly have at your disposal.

FHO: Now 100% More Mobile

I spent most of my holiday weekend writing. But tonight, in between the Cavs game, Iron Chef America and Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (we’re geeky here, but our interests are broad), I played with code (like I said–geeky). Happily, I neither wiped out all of my data, nor did I inadvertently convert all the text to the Cyrillic alphabet. Nope, instead I managed to tweak the functionality of the site. Most of it you probably won’t notice, but I would like to point you toward the new mobile version of the site. Now you can browse the site from your iPhone or web-enabled device of your choice. Just dial us up on your browser as usual–you’ll see a much more streamlined page, easier for viewing on small screens. Enjoy!

January Events: Stalking Awareness & Medical Mandated Reporting

January is a pretty slow month for online events, but there are a couple of things I’d like to bring to your attention. The first is that January is stalking awareness month. You can find a wide variety of resources and ways to promote awareness at their dedicated site. One of the things I particularly like is their 31 Days of Status Updates (PDF), which gives you daily crafted messages to use for Facebook updates or Twitter messages.

My (conflicted) love letter to 2009…

2009 has been a challenging year, filled with some incredible highs, and some pretty low lows. So as we finish up this year, here’s a look back at the good, the bad, and the ugly. (I’d love to hear what topped your lists in 2009, so feel free to let us know in the comments section, or as so many of you like to do, shoot me a note via the Contact form above.)
