Since Last We Spoke, 12-11-17

Well, another morning, another harasser named (by multiple sources, and admitting to the conduct in a released statement). This continues to be something to behold, and not surprisingly, much of what is catching my attention on social media relates to the continued exposure of these men, and the subsequent think pieces that have been rolling out (many of them, really well done). I’ve tried to limit those articles to the best of what I’ve read–here’s what I’ve been reading since last we spoke:

This moment isn’t just about sex (by one of my favorite writers)

Sexual harassment does not occur in a vacuum

Related (and this so speaks to me)

Health disparities are very real, folks

And also

A very satisfying (and relevant) essay series

Emergency rooms are monopolies.

Myth busters 🙂

When victim services don’t actually help

As the mother of a teen girl, yep

Finally, if you aren’t watching this show, you should:

Articles of Note: December 2017 Edition

It’s time once again for Articles of Note, the last one of 2017. As always, this is a review of the recent peer-reviewed literature, but is not exhaustive in nature. It’s meant to be used as a way to enhance currency and understanding of practice issues, and is not the final word on any single topic (I had a lawyer ask me about this, so now–here we are with the disclaimer). PDF with active links follows. Use in good health and share widely:

Updates from the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention

Can I confess something? I went to put together my list of articles for the weekly Since Last We Spoke post yesterday and–I just. Couldn’t. I’m so tired of reading the catalog of sexual misconduct that is coming out every day (a wonderfully privileged thing for me to be able to do–simply ignore stories of sexual misconduct), I couldn’t bring myself to do another post dominated by it. But seriously–it’s all I’ve been reading as of late. Accounts or responses to those accounts.

So we’ll get right into the meat of the week. Starting with a webinar recapping 2017: Updates from the Training Institute on Strangulation Prevention. The session will be held January 9th at 1pm ET. From the website:

Strangulation impacts all professionals working on sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking cases. Today, we know unequivocally that strangulation is one of the most lethal forms of domestic violence. Unconsciousness may occur within seconds and death within minutes. During this webinar, Casey Gwinn, JD, Gael Strack, JD, and Dr. William Smock will discuss lessons learned, best practices, and resources available for family violence and sexual assault professionals.

Subtopics will include:

– Findings from our survivor focus group

– New Medical Radiological Evaluation Recommendations from the Medical Advisory Board

– Best practices for identifying, documenting, investigating, and prosecuting strangulation cases

– Emerging issues in the field – medical, legal and advocacy trends

– Implementing new and existing legislation: Moving the dial in 2017

Surviving in the Shadows: Sexual Violence Against Men with Disabilities and Deaf Men

Vera Institute is hosting a webinar next month, Surviving in the Shadows: Sexual Violence Against Men with Disabilities and Deaf Men. The session will be held December 12th at 1pm ET. From the website:

Male survivors face unique obstacles when trying to access sexual assault and domestic violence services. When the survivor also has a disability or is Deaf, the barriers are compounded, making it even more difficult to access services. This webinar will provide service providers with insight into the victimization of men with disabilities, explore the unique barriers that male survivors with disabilities face when trying to access services, address some unanswered questions and gaps that need further study, and provide recommendations for better serving male survivors with disabilities and Deaf male survivors.

Key Findings of the Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace

What could be more timely than this? NSVRC has released the Key Findings of the Select Task Force on the Study of Harassment in the Workplace (PDF). The study brief covers the major findings from a year-long look into harassment in the workplace by the EEOC. [The EEOC, of course, is the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency charged with enforcing federal labor laws that prohibit workplace discrimination.] Terribly current, indeed.

You can read the full EEOC report here.

Since Last We Spoke, 11-27-17

Good morning from LGA, the 1st of 2 layovers for me today (ah, government travel). I wouldn’t say I am complaining per se, but I promise you it has not escaped me that it will take longer for me to get from DC to the Central Time Zone than it did for me to get to Germany last month.  Thank god for airport lounges. I tried to stay offline as much as possible over the holiday, which was glorious, but this morning it’s like I never took time off. So here’s what caught my eye since last we spoke:

Tough, but important read

So much of what dominates my news feed centers on sexual violence. Like so.

And so.

Also this.

Great column on good girls.

Doesn’t matter how powerful a woman you are, some things don’t change.

Angry men react

Heroic.

Need a little break from all the bleakness? Here you go. You’re welcome.

2017 Team Gift Guide

One of my favorite posts each year is our Team Gift Guide. While I’m a big fan of appreciating one another throughout the year, the holidays are the obvious time for a more obvious display of gratitude/affection/friendship/collegiality. So if you’ve been trying to figure out what to get a member or two of your team, allow me to make a few suggestions. Click on the image or the text for links. Note: this is not a sponsored post. Everything here is something I either love or would like to love (wink, hello Sasha.)

Please enjoy, and a very happy Thanksgiving to my American friends and colleagues. Hope it is filled with peace and love. I’ll be back next week with regular posts.

Since Last We Spoke, 11-20-17

I’ll be hanging out in the CLE for Thanksgiving and I could not be more excited. After many weeks on the road, at least this one will be spent surrounded by my family and a ridiculous amount of food. Before I head out, let’s see what caught my eye since last we spoke:

So many people coming forward; this article caught my attention for sure

The day DV came to church

Let’s not forget women harassed by non-famous men

Such a good question

Sex workers are not a life hack for helping sexual predators

And finally: what could be better than President Obama tweeting his own meme to wish VP Biden a happy birthday:

The Risk of Remaining Silent: Addressing the Current Threats to Women’s Health

In this current political climate, with many threats to individual health and well-being essentially sanctioned as national policy, it seems appropriate to post this newly published article in Women’s Health Issues, The Risk of Remaining Silent: Addressing the Current Threats to Women’s Health (PDF). While not directly related to violence, the article addresses many issues that our patients (and many of us as healthcare consumers) face. It would be short-sighted to think we can take care of the immediate violence in our patients lives, and not have to consider access to essential services patients might need in the aftermath (such as contraception and abortion services) and over their lifetimes (such as healthcare coverage for the types of chronic health issues that increase following violence). It’s brief–only 4 pages–and it’s written by smart people who know of what they speak.

Midwest Regional Children’s Advocacy Center has a webinar coming up, Working With Your Prosecutor in Child Sexual Abuse Cases. The session will be held December 14th at 2pm ET. I have zero information on the webinar, except what I’ve already told you here, so check back with the site to see if they post more details. Since Last We Spoke, 11-13-17

Good morning friends–I am back from France and after 9 glorious hours in my house, I am back at the airport. For those of you playing along at home, this makes 6 full weeks on the road since Labor Day. I won’t lie–I am tired. But this is the work we do (many of you are in the same boat and probably feeling the same way), and I am grateful for it. Traveling home yesterday meant plenty of time catching up on the interwebs. Seems like a bit of a reckoning right now for people who have done crappy things to other people, doesn’t it? Everywhere I look there are victims of violence finding their voices, and it is really something to see. Just sitting in the Delta Club typing this up I am overhearing a conversation between a couple business travelers about the culture shift in harassment. Fascinating. Here’s what caught my eye since last we spoke:

If you read only one thing from this list: the absolute best take on it all

Diana Nyad. Wow.

Will this change the way we think about outing?

Related.

In the wake of the Roy Moore story, an interesting Twitter hashtag

Glad this is being taken seriously

Sutherland Springs deserves an apology.

Real talk about how this election went down.

The best take on the use of this word

A good and inspiring list for this dreary Monday morning.

And finally, I haven’t watched it yet, but I have heard this was a pretty spot-on sketch from SNL

Before I depart for France, one more post for the week. I’ll be back next week with a few goodies, including my annual gift guide. In the meantime, enjoy this month’s Articles of Note, our regular romp through the peer-reviewed literature. New and improved, too–I upgraded my Adobe software and can now make linkable PDFs. You’re welcome 😉

And for those of you who are veterans, wishing you a Happy Veteran’s Day this week–thank you for your service, on this day and every day.

Since Last We Spoke, Forensic Nurses Week 2017

It’s Forensic Nurses Week, and I want so much to keep this celebratory, but of course, Texas is in all our minds, and that can’t be ignored. I’m home for a quick minute, but I’ll be heading to France on Wednesday, so postings will be mostly pulled from the archives. I hope everyone has a terrific week and is feeling fully appreciated. Glad to be a part of this amazing profession. Glad for all of FHO’s readers. Thanks for stopping by here on the regular.

Our first offering in the FHO store, Injury Following Consensual Sex is now available. If you haven’t ordered a copy yet, you can find it here

I wanted to bring to your attention the new IAFN Pediatric Strangulation Case Review and Assessment. I don’t typically post pricier options for continuing education, but this one looks comprehensive and has 20 CEs to go with it,  I think it’s worth your time and resources. Cost is $115, but if you attended the annual conference in Toronto, where it was previewed, you received a coupon code in your email that decreased the cost to $99. From the announcement:

IAFN and Evidentia Learning have jointly developed a new e-learning module on the topic of pediatric strangulation, which was officially launched at the IAFN conference in Toronto.

IAFN Pediatric Strangulation Case Review & Assessment contains a collection of living pediatric/adolescent strangulation patients evaluated and treated in the medical setting, presented in conjunction with evidence-based knowledge on pediatric strangulation evaluation and treatment.

Learners can assess their knowledge acquisition through a review of:
– Definitions and terminology
– Anatomy and physiology
– Manner and associated signs & symptoms
– 29 interactive cases
– Post-testing

I received a request from an FHO reader looking for research about sexual assault and trauma-informed care. I’m in Texas this week, and my schedule is unknown, so we’ll see how posting goes. Airport time is always prime for surfing, though, so I’ve managed to get some reading done. Here’s what’s caught my eye since last we spoke:

Supporting Survivor Access To Health Care

Our first offering in the FHO store, Injury Following Consensual Sex is now available. If you haven’t ordered a copy yet, you can find it here

As is always the case with their webinars, sorry about the late notice: Futures Without Violence is hosting a webinar next week, Supporting Survivor Access to Health Care: Open Enrollment, Updates on Changes to Health Policy, and Implications for Survivors. The session will be held October 31st, at 2pm ET. It’s a good one for the policy people among you. From the announcement:

Open Enrollment is November 1st, 2017 – December 15th, 2017! Did you know…

  • Health insurance is available for survivors and their families through the marketplace (healthcare.gov) and that significant financial help is still available for the purchase of coverage?
  • Screening and brief counseling for domestic violence and behavioral health are covered benefits in all plans offered on the marketplace?
  • There are special rules that help married victims of domestic violence and their dependents to qualify for financial help when they apply for health insurance or apply for a hardship exemption if needed?
  • Open enrollment is short this year and it is critically important to enroll starting November 1st for coverage on January 1, 2018?

Join this webinar to hear key steps and strategies about signing up for health insurance and how to help clients enroll in healthcare and understand the domestic violence provisions in the Affordable Care Act.
