UT Health and the TX chapter of IAFN are offering a webinar series. The first one is coming up July 21st at 7:00am CT (!): Nursing Assessment of Female Genitalia, featuring Jamie Ferrell. One CEU will be provided. Cost is $15 for IAFN members/$25 for non-members. Details for the session are forthcoming.

The forensic nurse must have expert knowledge of assessment findings with no room for error in interpretation. This webinar will provide the forensic nurse with advanced knowledge of normal, abnormal, and abnormal normal findings when assessing the female genitalia including appropriate and accurate use of terminology and documentation. After attending this event the forensic nurse will be more competent and confident in the nursing assessment of female genitalia during the forensic examination.

I am spending a lot of time this summer and fall teaching and writing about testifying (as well as actually consulting/testifying at trial), and I’m trying to add some new material to a couple of the presentations I do. So I figured I’d crowdsource this section…and offer up a service in exchange:
Did you know that there are two new national recommendations on screening and counseling for domestic violence in the healthcare setting? Both the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and the Institute of Medicine recommend that clinicians screen all women for intimate partner violence (IPV). The 2010 Affordable Care Act now requires coverage of screening and brief counseling for IPV by most private health insurance plans.
I worked most of the weekend, making my way back from a fantastic time out in Jackson Hole. Cannot say enough good things about the folks doing work with victims out there. Because of my limited weekend, my list is on the shorter side, but there were still a few interesting items that caught my eye since last we spoke:
Has anyone seen the film Paper Tigers yet? I really want to see it, and I’d love to hear from folks who already have. It doesn’t have the kind of distribution that makes it easy to go see, but you can host a screening or buy the film (hard copy or digital) for educational purposes. IAFN has a new session in their online learning center: HIV PEP in Pre Pubertal Patients. The better news is that until 30 June, it will only cost members $10 to participate (which includes 1 CEU credit). Click through for all the details:
It was lovely to spend the weekend outdoors, with my spouse and kid–we managed to get the kayaks on the water yesterday, there was grilling, dog walking, and many treats from our local farmers market. Very cathartic after these last several weeks. I’m headed out west to give a few talks (Jackson Hole, with a brief stopover in Eagle, CO) tomorrow morning, so we’ll see what the week brings here on the site. Another Monday morning post, another long list of articles about the latest mass shooting. Only this one has the distinction of being the worst the US has ever seen, and this was my community that was targeted. The only thing we could do yesterday was head down to the Pride Festival here in DC and stand in solidarity with so many. But not surprisingly, what I have spent most of my time reading are the stories that have stemmed from yet more senseless gun violence. Here’s what caught my eye since last we spoke:
On May 23rd we lost our dear friend, Teresa. An aggressive cancer took her far too soon, and we are left with a mountain of grief. There have been many tributes to T on Facebook, in blog posts, and in her hometown newspaper. All of them eloquently describe her professional legacy and recount her sunny and generous nature. I’ll forgo addressing both of those areas since they’ve been beautifully detailed, and instead tell you about something entirely different. I’ll tell you about T’s last year, and subsequently, about mine.
NSVRC is hosting a Q&A session on sexual violence in later life with Holly Ramsey-Klawsnik. The session will be held June 15th at 2pm ET. An interesting webinar coming up next week: Exploring Forensic DNA Evidence in Complex Cases of Sexual Violence. This webinar is being offered by Physicians for Human Rights on June 13th, at 10:30am ET, and appears to focus on areas that don’t have access to traditional medical-forensic exams. Slowly getting back into my previously scheduled life; it was a Reserve weekend, so I had plenty of time to dick around online while Sash was working. I was also supposed to be working this weekend, but my heart just wasn’t in it, as it turns out. So here’s what caught my eye since last we spoke:
I’m back and much refreshed after a very needed (and quick) getaway. And while I head back on the road shortly, I have all of next week in DC with my people, including a kid who comes home for the summer. With that, we resume normal operations at FHO. We are escaping the city, and perhaps a bit of our grief this holiday weekend, with a short trip to Amsterdam.
