There’s a ~~terrific~~ new article, available electronically ahead of publication that I’d like to highlight this morning. [Ed: okay, I will revise the terrific part, since the authors botch fluorescence vs absorption, or at least qualify my use of it to say that it’s terrific for me, because of the article’s conclusions.] It’s important, because it contributes to the science on using an alternate light source to identify subclinical bruising. The use of ALS for this purpose, particularly in strangulation cases, is one against which I caution folks, because the limited research on the subject hasn’t been particularly (forgive me) illuminating. This study changes that.

I’m in Alaska this week, hanging out with some of my favorite people. Thanks to Barb Bachmeier for this update: The American Society for Emergency Contraception has a published paper on the issue of EC and body weight (PDF) with an overview of the existing science and recommendations for clinicians. Although it doesn’t settle the issue, it provides solid evidence-based guidance. A good read for you and your team.

The Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Action Alliance has a ew toolkit available on Reproductive and Sexual Coercion. Do not let the fact that it says that it’s a toolkit for advocates dissuade you form spending some quality time with it–this is a very thorough resource and there’s much in here from which healthcare providers will benefit.

Back on the road this week–San Antonio and then on to Montgomery, AL. I was a tad spoiled, being off the road for a whole month. That’s over now–I’ll get home late Friday night only to turn around and leave early Sunday morning for a week in Alaska (because, February, so of course, Alaska). The Teenage Brain

Writing this in anticipation of tomorrow’s massive storm–we’re only supposed to get the tail end of it, but Sasha’s trying to fly to San Diego from Baltimore for the child abuse conference (she’ll be teaching multiple sessions on Tuesday for those of you who are hoping to run into her), so we’re a tad concerned. The Evil Hours

Failure (x 2)

I believe in failure in the same way I believe in reading research, being early and drinking jasmine pearl tea every morning. I don’t think success is possible without failure. There’s no way to have huge success without also having huge failure along the way. I was having trouble sleeping the other night, so I (virtually) thumbed through my blog reader where I came across not one, but two different posts on failure.
