My colleague Jeff Greipp is presenting a webinar for the FJCA, Witness Intimidation in Domestic Violence Cases: Emerging Promising Practices and Coordinated Community Responses. The session will take place June 23rd from 9-10:30 PDT. While this may sound very law enforcement-focused, I know how Jeff teaches this information, and he’s fantastic at weaving in the multidisciplinary threads, including the healthcare piece.

The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the National Association of County & City Health Officials and the Safe States Alliance are co-sponsoring a webcast, Programs and Partnerships to Prevent Gang-Related Youth Violence. 10 Things: Birthday Edition
Today’s my birthday, and I’m going to spend it as I spend so many of my days–working. That’s not a complaint, by the way. I am quite blessed to love what I do and to be afforded the opportunity to do it with so many incredible people. However, while I’m in front of my computer I will take advantage of the fact that it’s June 1st and give you my 10 Things: Birthday Edition. Or, 10 things I hope will happen in the next 365 days:
Several organizations are collaborating on resources to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15th. There will be 2 online events held on that day. The 1st is a blog radio segment featuring a panel of experts discussing abuse in later life. The session will be held from 1-1:30 ET, and can be accessed here.
I’ve been waiting for these to be available electronically for awhile now. As promised, Competencies Needed by Health Professionals for Addressing Exposure to Violence and Abuse in Patient Care (PDF) is now available for download from the Academy on Violence and Abuse. Perfect? No. A good start? Absolutely.
NIJ has a new publication on the DNA kit backlog, The Road Ahead: Unanalyzed Evidence in Sexual Assault Cases (PDF). From the Introduction: “Untested sexual assault evidence is being discovered in police evidence rooms all across the country. In this report, the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) offers an overview of the issue. We look at a variety of ramifications for the police and crime laboratories, for the courts and for the victims.” (p. iii).
The National AIA Resource Center has a teleconference series that includes Assessing and Intervening in the Home with Victims of Intimate Partner Violence. The session will take place June 7th, at 10am PT. Cost to register is per phone line at $25 (that means you can pay for one registration and have your whole team listening in if you wanted).

I’m getting ready to head to Austin, where I hope I will see many of you at this year’s SANE-SART Conference. However, right now it is time once again for Articles of Note. SAFEta Source will be presenting a webinar on transgendered sexual violence on Thursday, June 30th at 2pm ET. The National Protocol for Sexual Assault Medical Forensic Examinations of Adults and Adolescents encourages a victim centered approach to caring for patients who have experienced sexual violence. Transgendered persons offer unique challenges in assuring victim centered care.

LGBT Bullying
A small teaser for this month’s Articles of Note: The Family Acceptance Project at San Francisco State University is “the only community research, intervention, education and policy initiative that works to decrease major health and related risks for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth, such as suicide, substance abuse, HIV and homelessness – in the context of their families.” They have a new study, published this month in the Journal of School Health, that looks at the long-term healthcare implications of bullying in the LGBT community. We have so little data on the impact of bullying over time, this provides a fantastic look at what it means for the physical, mental and sexual health of these patients.
