Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step

I’m thinking quite a bit today about Evidence-Based Practice and figured I’d share a resource. We throw this word around a lot, but I find in talking with many clinicians that there is a fundamental difficulty in describing exactly what that means and how to ensure that your practice is indeed evidence-based. The American Journal of Nursing has a pretty comprehensive series on this subject, Evidence-Based Practice, Step by Step. The collection has 12 articles, and 10 are free full-text. There are also 4 CE opportunities attached to the collection (for a fee). Hopefully that will give folks some resources to look more closely at their own practices, if needed.

{Don’t forget: we also have the Understanding Research clinical guide to help with this topic, as well}

Clinical Guide: Compassion Fatigue, Burnout & Vicarious Trauma

April is both Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month: two issues central to many of our practices, both of which can take a serious toll on clinicians. It seems like compassion fatigue (and its sisters, vicarious trauma and burnout) don’t get nearly enough attention in our professional circles. But really, they should–a recent study found that 85% of emergency department nurses surveyed reported moderate to high levels of compassion fatigue. I’d be interested in what the results would look like if they surveyed a group of forensic clinicians.

Full-Text Friday: Bruising in Children Assessed for Abuse

I love FHO readers–the emails I received about last week’s choice were comical to say the least. If only I could get you to share them with one another [sigh]. I taught for the Army this week, and amidst some fantastic questions was the issue of bruising. Made me realize it was high time for an article focusing on the subject. There’s a new one available that looks at bruising in child abuse–seemed like a good choice for our full-text friday offering:

Articles of Note, February 2014 Edition

Time once again for Articles of Note, a look at some of the newest literature published in the peer-reviewed journals with the last 30(ish) days. There’s a lot to look at this month, although most of it requires a subscription or library access, sadly. It’s a pretty diverse lot this month, so you’ll want to wade through the list and see what catches your eye.

New ACE Study DVD

I’m off to teach for a few days in Nebraska, so just a quick post today– The Academy on Violence and Abuse has a new DVD available on the ACE Study. Although it’s not free (it’s currently available at an introductory rate of $45), there is a free preview available of the DVD on their home page. Considering that this video is more than 3 hours, with multiple sections perfect for using in a CE program or staff development session, it’s a good investment. More on how to get your own copy here.

Violent Repeat Victimization

I typically don’t post live events here, but I want to mention this one for anyone in the DC area: NIJ is hosting a live seminar series, Research for the Real World. The next talk in the series is April 12th from 10-11:30 am: Violent Repeat Victimization: Prospects and Challenges for Research and Practice. Dr. Janet Lauritsen will be the speaker. You can find details about location here. And if you can’t attend the live session?

Articles of Note: March Edition

Time once again for Articles of Note. This month’s is basically stuff from the 1st quarter. I included a couple of January articles I missed in earlier editions, so you’ll see articles as far back as the beginning of the year. There is so much good stuff on this list. I know I say that a lot, but this month I feel like people took a look at the “I wish people would research ___” section of my Moleskine (and yes, that really is one of the sections because as I’ve mentioned before, I’m a HUGE NERD), and said, “meh, why not?”.

Updated Clinical Guides

Just something to make note of: I have updated several of the clinical guides to reflect new research in recently published journals. The consensual sex injury guide is one of the most popular item here at FHO (and my most frequently read PDF on Scribd), and it’s been updated, along with the alternate light source guide (part I, which addresses using ALS for identifying skin stains) and the cost of child abuse guide.

Articles of Note: January Edition

It’s time once again for Articles of Note. These are a selection from the late December and January peer-reviewed journals that have caught my attention. Remember, it’s in no way a comprehensive or exhaustive list, but it’s an excellent place to start. The majority of the links will take you to PubMed. There are also a couple free full-text article in here. I’ve tried to add in a few more non-North American studies at the request of a few of my readers.

Connection Between DV and Stalking

January is Stalking Awareness Month, and over at VAWNet, there’s a great overview on the connection between domestic violence and stalking. By all means, click on the citations, as well, which will take you to full text documents. Good points to support any argument for expanding dv screening to include stalking behaviors. And further reason to add stalking to your list of continuing education topics for 2012.

NISVS Fact Sheet

As a follow up to yesterday’s post, CDC has also created a two page fact sheet (PDF) that would be a great inclusion for staff meetings, clinical in-services and conversations with potential funders.

National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey

Results from the CDC’s 2010 National Intimate Partner and Sexual Violence Survey (NISVS)  have just been released. You can read the Summary Report here (PDF); the briefer (8 page) Executive Summary here (PDF). Some of the bleak stats:

**Nearly 1 in 5 women (18.3%) and 1 in 71 men (1.4%) in the United States have been raped at some time in their lives.

**More than half (51.1%) of female victims of rape reported being raped by an intimate partner and 40.8% by an acquaintance; for male victims, more than half (52.4%) reported being raped by an acquaintance and 15.1% by a stranger.

**Most female victims of completed rape (79.6%) experienced their first rape before the age of 25; 42.2% experienced their first completed rape before the age of 18 years.

**More than 1 in 3 women (35.6%) and more than 1 in 4 men (28.5%) in the United States have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
