Well, folks, I’m heading to Rome for what will be a week of pure vacation. No computer, no blackberry, no cell phone. Posts will continue while I’m away, but I won’t be answering any correspondence until I’m back in the country on the 7th. That being said, there are a bunch of interesting offerings coming up over the next several weeks, including this one. Just a quickie today as I am trying to get ready for a (slightly anxiety-provoking) trip to South Carolina tomorrow. Assuming Irene gives me a break, I’ll be back in time for the weekend–and my upcoming vacation (but more on that next week). I had a question from an FHO reader about talking to the media, and I don’t have a tremendous amount of insight on this topic, because I don’t have a lot of experience in this realm. But there seem to be some useful resources on how to do this effectively (and if you have other advice or resources, please let us know in the Comments).
Yet another item that got buried in the queue of things waiting to get posted: NSVRC has a podcast series available that’s a great resource for those of you working in rural areas. The Just Rural Podcast Series includes 4 interviews with members of different disciplines; transcripts from each of the podcasts are also available.
Can anyone give me the science on smoking and increased skin friability? I am well-aware of the research around wound healing in smokers (see here as an example), but can anyone point me to published articles on tissue actually injuring more easily because of smoking? I heard it mentioned twice in the last week, so my interest is piqued.

Many of you probably don’t know this, but for the 1st time in 5 years I did something really revolutionary (at least in my life): I took an airport sabbatical. For more than 2 months now, I have not engaged in any business travel. With the exception of one quick jaunt to Florida for a funeral, I have not so much as stepped foot on an airplane since returning from SANE-SART(!). I decided that I needed extra mom time, and so I have stayed in DC, concentrated on some writing projects and generally enjoyed quality time with my people. All that comes to an end tomorrow. The travel season is upon us and once again, I will spend the next 3 months on the road some portion of almost every week. First up?

Okay, now that it’s just us, I need to ask you–where are you guys? I see you all over Facebook, but out there on Twitter, you’re nowhere to be found. Do you know how much amazing information is sent out into the universe via 140 characters? Do you know that our advocate colleagues have a serious presence on Twitter? Collaboration and interdisciplinary education no longer just happen in person. In fact, much of it is happening less and less in person and more through social media than ever before. Some of the best info I get comes from folks like @ORSATF, @PreventConnect, and so on. And all the good stuff that so many of you email to tell me you love about FHO? There’s even more of it on Twitter. That’s where I send out information on region-specific trainings, great news articles and much, much more. If you’re not, you should head on over and spend some quality time trolling through the different sections. It’s a source for online violence education tools, but it’s grounded in prevention. Specifically a public health approach, using a social-ecological model.
