Women and Children with HIV/AIDS

Don’t miss our current giveaway. Get all of the details here to enter.

Although not specific to forensic clinical issues, HIV/AIDS is important to understand–not just in terms of exposure, but also in terms of the realities for our patients who have been diagnosed. The National Abandoned Infants Assistance Resource Center has a really well-done tutorial, Women and Children with HIV/AIDS, that’s worth completing. And best of all, it has 2 CEUs attached to it (which can be purchased for $11).

Using Logic Models for Planning and Evaluation

Don’t miss our current giveaway. Get all of the details here to enter.

I know that logic models don’t get everyone’s heart pounding, but you know I do love a good evaluation session. Last week in South Carolina, I spent a very enjoyable day with many of the state’s forensic nurses, and we briefly discussed the issue of outcomes, and what those look like for our programs.

Violence Prevention and OSHA

Don’t miss our current giveaway. Get all of the details here to enter.

Well, folks, I’m heading to Rome for what will be a week of pure vacation. No computer, no blackberry, no cell phone. Posts will continue while I’m away, but I won’t be answering any correspondence until I’m back in the country on the 7th. That being said, there are a bunch of interesting offerings coming up over the next several weeks, including this one. Their description is a tad wordy and hard to follow, but for those of you working on agency anti-violence policies, or for those of you trying to figure out how to incorporate prevention into your practice, this may offer some interesting takeaways:

Online Human Trafficking Training for Healthcare Providers

Polaris Project tweeted this weekend about their online training module for healthcare providers, which I had flagged for posting and then somehow, never actually posted. So without further delay, their module, Recognizing and Responding to Human Trafficking in a Health Care Context (note: this module will not work with Google Chrome).

10 Things: Indicators A Program Is Lacking a Quality Assurance Process

Unless you’re brand new to the site, you already know I am a big proponent of quality assurance (QA) and peer review. As a part of my job I review a lot of medical records (nurse- and physician-generated), and there are some things in said records that scream “my program has no QA process”. Since every time I come across one of these issues it takes 4 or 5 days off of my life, in the interest of self-preservation I give you my newest 10 Things:

Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders

I’m on the road today, and by the looks of the rain and gloom outside, not to mention the chill in my hotel room, I am most certainly not in Hawaii any longer. Nope–welcome to Newport, RI, where I feel like I went from Monday to November. So it’s the perfect day for a little video inspiration from our friends at TED.

Talking to the Media

I had a question from an FHO reader about talking to the media, and I don’t have a tremendous amount of insight on this topic, because I don’t have a lot of experience in this realm. But there seem to be some useful resources on how to do this effectively (and if you have other advice or resources, please let us know in the Comments).

A Question for the Readers: Smoking and Injury

Can anyone give me the science on smoking and increased skin friability? I am well-aware of the research around wound healing in smokers (see here as an example), but can anyone point me to published articles on tissue actually injuring more easily because of smoking? I heard it mentioned twice in the last week, so my interest is piqued.

Much obliged…

Back on the Road

Many of you probably don’t know this, but for the 1st time in 5 years I did something really revolutionary (at least in my life): I took an airport sabbatical. For more than 2 months now, I have not engaged in any business travel. With the exception of one quick jaunt to Florida for a funeral, I have not so much as stepped foot on an airplane since returning from SANE-SART(!). I decided that I needed extra mom time, and so I have stayed in DC, concentrated on some writing projects and generally enjoyed quality time with my people. All that comes to an end tomorrow. The travel season is upon us and once again, I will spend the next 3 months on the road some portion of almost every week. First up?

Twitter (Where are you, people?)

This is a post for the forensic nurses, so the rest of you please look away for a sec…

Okay, now that it’s just us, I need to ask you–where are you guys? I see you all over Facebook, but out there on Twitter, you’re nowhere to be found. Do you know how much amazing information is sent out into the universe via 140 characters? Do you know that our advocate colleagues have a serious presence on Twitter? Collaboration and interdisciplinary education no longer just happen in person. In fact, much of it is happening less and less in person and more through social media than ever before. Some of the best info I get comes from folks like @ORSATF@PreventConnect, and so on. And all the good stuff that so many of you email to tell me you love about FHO? There’s even more of it on Twitter. That’s where I send out information on region-specific trainings, great news articles and much, much more. See that button to the right of this post, just under the Subscribe via Email? That’s all you have to click on to follow @ForensicHealth (that’s me) right now.

Am I the Only One Who Thinks Like This?

Don’t forget: the giveaway is going on now through August 3rd! Get all the details here to enter.

The John Next Door

Crazy busy here at FHO headquarters this morning (and by headquarters, I of course mean my kitchen), so I will leave you with an interesting read, especially for all of you doing anti-trafficking work. Check out Newsweek’s article, The John Next Door, about the growing demand for prostitution. Some very intriguing research featured in the piece.

Sobriety and Medical Consent

Can we all agree on one thing? The BAC threshold of .08 is not a measure of sobriety in general terms. It is a measure of a person’s sobriety as it pertains to safely operating a motor vehicle. I would like to ask my colleagues who are turning patients away because they are blowing > .08 to please reconsider this practice. Denying patients care because their BAC is over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle makes no sense.

Using Social Media Wisely

One of FHO’s readers sent me an article this morning on an appellate decision related to the use of Facebook. The decision centered around whether a student at the University of Minnesota could be disciplined because of Facebook posts created off campus and outside of academic hours. And so far, the answer continues to be yes. I post this because when I speak on the issue of defensible practice, a topic about which I am passionate, one of the key areas I touch on is the use of social media. As I’ve written previously, I am a huge fan of things like Facebook, and obviously there’s this blog, and it’s connected to my Twitter feed, so, yeah, I’m all over the interwebs.
