A Question for the Readers: Smoking and Injury

Can anyone give me the science on smoking and increased skin friability? I am well-aware of the research around wound healing in smokers (see here as an example), but can anyone point me to published articles on tissue actually injuring more easily because of smoking? I heard it mentioned twice in the last week, so my interest is piqued.

Much obliged…

Back on the Road

Many of you probably don’t know this, but for the 1st time in 5 years I did something really revolutionary (at least in my life): I took an airport sabbatical. For more than 2 months now, I have not engaged in any business travel. With the exception of one quick jaunt to Florida for a funeral, I have not so much as stepped foot on an airplane since returning from SANE-SART(!). I decided that I needed extra mom time, and so I have stayed in DC, concentrated on some writing projects and generally enjoyed quality time with my people. All that comes to an end tomorrow. The travel season is upon us and once again, I will spend the next 3 months on the road some portion of almost every week. First up?

Veto Violence

The twittersphere has been awash with Veto Violence posts, so some of you may be familiar with this site already. If you’re not, you should head on over and spend some quality time trolling through the different sections. It’s a source for online violence education tools, but it’s grounded in prevention. Specifically a public health approach, using a social-ecological model.

Twitter (Where are you, people?)

This is a post for the forensic nurses, so the rest of you please look away for a sec…

Okay, now that it’s just us, I need to ask you–where are you guys? I see you all over Facebook, but out there on Twitter, you’re nowhere to be found. Do you know how much amazing information is sent out into the universe via 140 characters? Do you know that our advocate colleagues have a serious presence on Twitter? Collaboration and interdisciplinary education no longer just happen in person. In fact, much of it is happening less and less in person and more through social media than ever before. Some of the best info I get comes from folks like @ORSATF@PreventConnect, and so on. And all the good stuff that so many of you email to tell me you love about FHO? There’s even more of it on Twitter. That’s where I send out information on region-specific trainings, great news articles and much, much more. See that button to the right of this post, just under the Subscribe via Email? That’s all you have to click on to follow @ForensicHealth (that’s me) right now.

Articles of Note, July/August Edition

Don’t forget: FHO’s latest giveaway is going on now through August 3rd! Get all the details here to enter.

It’s time once again for Articles Note. These are a selection from peer-reviewed journals that feel particularly relevant to our practice. Remember, it’s in no way a comprehensive or exhaustive list, but it’s an excellent place to start. The majority of the links will take you to PubMed. There are also several free full-text articles in here, so we can all be happy about that. Peds people, you guys have a boat-load of good stuff in here, but trust me when I tell you this–there’s something for everyone in the journals this month.

Am I the Only One Who Thinks Like This?

I love the earnest responses we’ve seen to the temporary tattoo giveaway question, but come on–doesn’t at least one of you want to slap a speculum tattoo on your arm and waltz into your spouse’s dreary company cocktail party just to loosen folks up a bit?

Don’t forget: the giveaway is going on now through August 3rd! Get all the details here to enter.

Clinical Preventive Services for Women

Some of you may have been following the release of the Institute of Medicine’s report on clinical preventive services for women. This is a big, big deal for a number of reasons, not the least of which is their recommendation that women have access to birth control without a co-pay. But did you know their were some violence-related issues addressed in thew new report, as well?

Direct Assistance for Victims of Trafficking

The other day I posted on the Newsweek article about prostitution and human trafficking, and judging by the unbelievable number of hits, FHO readers have some significant interest in the topic. So I wanted to follow up with a resource on providing healthcare for victims of trafficking.

Intimate Partner Homicide Prevention

VAWNet has just published a brand new special collection on intimate partner homicide prevention that looks fantastic. It has a lot of the resources we frequently use when teaching on the topic of assessing dangerousness, in particular, that I really appreciate. See the full table of contents (with links) after the jump.

The John Next Door

Crazy busy here at FHO headquarters this morning (and by headquarters, I of course mean my kitchen), so I will leave you with an interesting read, especially for all of you doing anti-trafficking work. Check out Newsweek’s article, The John Next Door, about the growing demand for prostitution. Some very intriguing research featured in the piece.

Sobriety and Medical Consent

Can we all agree on one thing? The BAC threshold of .08 is not a measure of sobriety in general terms. It is a measure of a person’s sobriety as it pertains to safely operating a motor vehicle. I would like to ask my colleagues who are turning patients away because they are blowing > .08 to please reconsider this practice. Denying patients care because their BAC is over the legal limit to operate a motor vehicle makes no sense.

10 Things: The FHO Expert Witness Bill of Rights

I am consulting on a couple cases right now, so testimony is on my mind. Today I am going to post my Expert Witness’ Bill of Rights. By all means, please do add to this if you come up with any I have missed. Also remember, this is opinion and opinion only. Just because I think it’s true doesn’t mean you will agree, or that the attorneys you work with will care what I think (in fact I’d say it’s a solid bet that they won’t). So, with all those caveats, here are what I consider to be essential considerations for taking on the role of expert witness:
