Since Last We Spoke 11-10-14

A good Monday morning to you all–I trust you had a fine weekend? This was really the 1st actual weekend Sasha and I had together in quite sometime, uninterrupted by travel or Reserve duty. We really got a chance to enjoy ourselves, too: spent a little time getting fancy and heading into the District for SANE In the City, the DC SANE program’s fundraiser (they’re finally building their own exam room). Congrats on a successful event!

I’m actually home this week, but gearing up for our next IPV course in Phoenix on the 17th (hope to see many of you there, since we have a pretty big group registered); that’s where most of my efforts will be spent over the next several days. But before I get too immersed in all of that, here’s what’s caught my eye since last we spoke:

Since Last We Spoke 11-3-14

Man, it is so nice to be home. Two weeks in strange beds (even when they’re nice beds) is too much. And now I have two glorious weeks at home, with my spouse (and the kiddo, who will be here in 10 days). Whatever will I do with myself? Oh, that’s right–all of the things. That’s how it feels when I look at my schedule. There are last minute touches to add to a new curriculum, multiple courses to teach, and one more court martial before things (allegedly) quiet down. So I will definitely take these two weeks–busy or not, at least it’s busy at home.

I have finally acclimated to my current time zone, but this weekend I saw many middle of the night hours–what I learned the Scots call the wee sma’s*–so in order to bide my time until I could sleep again, I caught up on the interwebs in all their glory. I’m heading home from CLE today after a long weekend with my daughter and parents, so I spent way more time playing than being online. All in all, a really welcome reprieve from what will be a fairly hectic couple of weeks–prepping for and attending the IAFN conference, and then immediately heading to Europe for a military trial. Worthwhile Read: Connecting the Dots

Screen Shot 2014-10-02 at 5.59.42 PMThe CDC and the Prevention Institute published Connecting the Dots: An Overview of the Links Among Multiple Forms of Violence recently, but it didn’t seem to get much in the way of fanfare when it was released. That being said,  I think it’s an important read. Our patients frequently experience multiple forms of violence in their lives, and understanding the overlap allows for more trauma-informed care and more targeted assistance. What’s nice about this report is that it also comes with its own slide deck for teaching purposes, so this is a great resource to bookmark for future use.

I’m on my way to the NAC (for the 2nd of 3 trips down there in a month)–we’re kicking off the inaugural run of a fantastic (I hope) interactive testimony course for SANEs and prosecutors. Considering we started working on this about 18 months ago, it’s exciting to finally see it come to fruition. And a bit nerve-wracking, as all 1st time courses can be. Here we go: vacation is behind us and a modified (but still busy) travel season resumes for our household. Happily it’s not me on the road this week, but after taking a week off, I can hardly corral my to-do list. Always a trade-off, that whole taking time off thing. Full-Text Friday (on Sunday): Childhood Misfortune as a Threat to Successful Aging

You know your brain is a tad overloaded when the mere act of hitting the “publish” button is too much. So this post sat languishing in draft purgatory until I noticed this bit of sadness and quickly rectified. Apologies for being absent from Full-Text Fridays for awhile. The truth is that it’s fairly time-consuming and everyone knows, this is my nerdy hobby. So sometimes things don’t happen.

I’m including this article for your perusal because I never stop talking to people about the impact of violence on health. This full-text piece examines adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and their impact on aging, the relevance of which I hope is immediately apparent. Details after the jump:

Digital Girls

Apologies for the absence yesterday–I am battling a migraine that is getting the best of me and it was just not a good day. But I am trying to muscle through it (as I post from ORD on my way to MCI), and this webinar is worthy of notice. SAMHSA has been hosting a Girls Matter webinar series and the next offering in the series is one called Digital Girls: Confession, Connection and Disconnection.It will be held May 20th from 3-4:30 pm ET.  Rachel Simmons is one of the featured speakers (perhaps you’ve read Odd Girl Out?). It should be a good session, particularly for those of you who work with adolescents frequently. Details after the jump:

Since Last We Spoke 3/17/14

Sorry to have been absent so much last week–the one-two punch of a difficult trial and an epic migraine made the latter half of last week challenging (I have a string of four-letter expletives that’s probably more accurate and descriptive, but we’ll stick with challenging for now). However, my kid is in town and we are heading to my happy place this week (Eagle, CO) for some family time. Posts should be regular–I’m stacking them in advance, and I’ll periodically check emails if you’re looking for me. But don’t expect responses during prime ski hours. I’ll be busy:)

Speaking of vacations, in an unprecedented move I am taking time off during two consecutive months, and need some input from my well-traveled readers. Next month, my best friend and I are heading to Argentina–Buenos Aires and Mendoza specifically. If anyone has some ideas for must-see/eat/stay places, please do let me know. Off the beaten path is particularly appealing. This will be my 1st trip to South America, so I’m pretty stoked.

PreventConnect has a fantastic webinar coming up that I would strongly recommend: Links Between Bullying and Sexual Violence. The webinar will be offered twice, once on February 27th, and again March 2nd. Both sessions begin at 11am PST. The session will be centered around the recently published article, Bullying Perpetration and Subsequent Sexual Violence Perpetration Among Middle School Students (Journal of Adolescent Health).
