There’s a lot to slog through this month (the Journal of Interpersonal Violence is responsible for half the content alone), but definitely some fascinating subject matter (like the relationship between economic status and sexual violence), so I hope you’ll take some time to work your way through the list. A good Monday morning to you all–I trust you had a fine weekend? This was really the 1st actual weekend Sasha and I had together in quite sometime, uninterrupted by travel or Reserve duty. We really got a chance to enjoy ourselves, too: spent a little time getting fancy and heading into the District for SANE In the City, the DC SANE program’s fundraiser (they’re finally building their own exam room). Congrats on a successful event!
I’m actually home this week, but gearing up for our next IPV course in Phoenix on the 17th (hope to see many of you there, since we have a pretty big group registered); that’s where most of my efforts will be spent over the next several days. But before I get too immersed in all of that, here’s what’s caught my eye since last we spoke:

Since Last We Spoke 11-3-14
Man, it is so nice to be home. Two weeks in strange beds (even when they’re nice beds) is too much. And now I have two glorious weeks at home, with my spouse (and the kiddo, who will be here in 10 days). Whatever will I do with myself? Oh, that’s right–all of the things. That’s how it feels when I look at my schedule. There are last minute touches to add to a new curriculum, multiple courses to teach, and one more court martial before things (allegedly) quiet down. So I will definitely take these two weeks–busy or not, at least it’s busy at home.
I have finally acclimated to my current time zone, but this weekend I saw many middle of the night hours–what I learned the Scots call the wee sma’s*–so in order to bide my time until I could sleep again, I caught up on the interwebs in all their glory. Here’s what I’ve been checking out since last we spoke:

I don’t know, but I have to tell you, this is one of those. First off, there’s a lot to wade through. And second, there’s a lot of breadth to the research, meaning that this month’s list should be relevant to a wide variety of practices. As always, the review isn’t exhaustive, just what’s caught my eye in the September/October/November journals (and the online releases). Since Last We Spoke 7-21-14
We finally cleared the last of our houseguests yesterday (that’s 10 days of people in our tiny place for those of you tracking), so we’re back to status quo. I head down to the NAC for the Army this week, but aside from that it should be relatively mellow. I was busy playing tourist in my own city this weekend, but there was still plenty of time to catch up on the news of the day. Here’s what’s caught my eye since last we spoke:

I’m having a tough time ramping up for my work week this morning. Could be the impending vacation (no worries, there will be [some] posts while I’m away). Could be that I was so completely productive last week I just feel like coasting a bit. Either way, the internet can be a distraction when I’m in this mindset, so I have been happily perusing all of the links I’d tucked away from the weekend. Oh man, I do love me a good research compilation, and CALCASA delivers: the 2014 Sexual Violence Research Review is now available. Read the executive summary here; download the full report here (PDF). Super excited about this one.
And speaking of excited, come back tomorrow for the 2014 TIP Report, being released tomorrow by the State Department. It’s like nerd paradise up in here.
Did you have a fantastic weekend? We did for sure–a glorious, not-too-hot one in the DC metro area. And along with that, the awesome news that my spouse was promoted to Major, which meant some small celebrations around here (in anticipation of the big one that will come with the official ceremony next month). Still there was some down time, which almost always means being plugged in somewhere. So here’s what I’ve been checking out since last we spoke:
I’m teaching today in Wichita–another advanced testimony workshop. It’s the last training of the busy spring season. After this I come off the road a bit. I get to slow down and enjoy the fact that my kid is in DC for the summer (as of Saturday–happy birthday to me!) I take only one significant travel job each month during summers, so while I will have plenty to occupy my time (as if), I will be doing it from the comfort of my tiny DC dollhouse by and large.

Since Last We Spoke 4-14-14
This is my last full week in the office before vacation, save some work with the Army JAGs here in town, so I am glued to my to-do list. That being said I did manage to get some reading done this weekend (although the pull of 70+ degree weather and sunshine was irresistible), but much of it had to do with the terrible tragedy in Kansas yesterday. I know it will be part of our conversation around the Seder table tonight as we celebrate Passover, keeping the victims and their families and community in our prayers. Since Last We Spoke 3/31/14
I’m hustling today, big time. The weekend was a busy one, with my kiddo heading back to school and deadlines closing in. So a short list for you today, but still interesting. Here’s what I’ve been reading since last we spoke:
Sorry to have been absent so much last week–the one-two punch of a difficult trial and an epic migraine made the latter half of last week challenging (I have a string of four-letter expletives that’s probably more accurate and descriptive, but we’ll stick with challenging for now). However, my kid is in town and we are heading to my happy place this week (Eagle, CO) for some family time. Posts should be regular–I’m stacking them in advance, and I’ll periodically check emails if you’re looking for me. But don’t expect responses during prime ski hours. I’ll be busy:)
Speaking of vacations, in an unprecedented move I am taking time off during two consecutive months, and need some input from my well-traveled readers. Next month, my best friend and I are heading to Argentina–Buenos Aires and Mendoza specifically. If anyone has some ideas for must-see/eat/stay places, please do let me know. Off the beaten path is particularly appealing. This will be my 1st trip to South America, so I’m pretty stoked.
Anyway, let’s get back to the matter at hand–a little taste of what I’ve been reading since last we spoke:
The US Department of Health and Human Services has a webinar series, The Impact of Trauma on Women and Girls Across the Lifespan. Their next offering is March 27th, 2pm ET, Disaster Behavioral Health: Lessons Learned from the Past Decade. However, there are multiple archived sessions available, as well.

The US Department of Defense just released a report on sexual assaults in military service academies (PDF), along with information about 2 new sexual assault policies (transfers for victims and maintenance of records). You can find an overview of the information here.

I spent several days this week teaching for the Marine Corps; one day with the prosecutors and one day with defense. So I definitely have been thinking about the issue of sexual assault in the military and their criminal justice response. But it’s more than just training JAGs; it’s also several items that have come across my desk in the past week, which add a layer of complexity around discussions on this issue.
