Since Last We Spoke 11-10-14

A good Monday morning to you all–I trust you had a fine weekend? This was really the 1st actual weekend Sasha and I had together in quite sometime, uninterrupted by travel or Reserve duty. We really got a chance to enjoy ourselves, too: spent a little time getting fancy and heading into the District for SANE In the City, the DC SANE program’s fundraiser (they’re finally building their own exam room). Congrats on a successful event!

I’m actually home this week, but gearing up for our next IPV course in Phoenix on the 17th (hope to see many of you there, since we have a pretty big group registered); that’s where most of my efforts will be spent over the next several days. I’m heading home from CLE today after a long weekend with my daughter and parents, so I spent way more time playing than being online. All in all, a really welcome reprieve from what will be a fairly hectic couple of weeks–prepping for and attending the IAFN conference, and then immediately heading to Europe for a military trial. I woke up this morning at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington, very far from home and decidedly still on east coast time. I’ll be here for a hot minute before I move on to Billings, MT where we are rolling out a brand new IPV curriculum (super excited about that), so this week is a long one. I will attempt regular posts, but forgive me if they’re a bit light this week. You just never know how a new course will go. Unaccompanied Immigrant Minors Town Hall

From an email announcement I received today:

The National Center for Child Traumatic Stress (NCCTS) in collaboration with the NCTSN Culture Consortium, Terrorism and Disaster Program and Policy Taskforce, is sponsoring a Virtual Town Hall meeting to address the recent surge in unaccompanied immigrant minors from a trauma-informed perspective. Unaccompanied immigrant minors are youth who come to the United States without a legal guardian and without legal immigration documents. There has also been a surge of young children who come with their caregiver across the border of the United States without immigration documentation. The 90-minute Town Hall is scheduled for Tuesday, September 16th at 9 Pacific / 11 Central / 12 Eastern (see attached flyer). All are welcome!

I’m with the Navy and Marines in Newport, RI this week, one of my favorite gigs of the year. It’s hard to believe it’s that time again, because of course the year has flown by. Less than 10 days left with my kiddo before she returns to school, so I’m especially grateful she’s traveling with me (she’s an excellent and experienced traveling companion, so it’s relatively effortless). Clinical Guide: Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting

After yesterday’s post I received a request from an FHO reader for more resources on caring for patients who have experienced female genital mutilation/cutting (literature seems to be divided on the proper terminology so I am using both here). Not surprisingly, there isn’t a huge amount of clinically-focused information out there, and much of it is specific to obstetrics. I rounded up what appeared to be the best and most current articles and clinical guidelines (mostly free full-text) and included links to previous FHO posts addressing the same topic. As always, it’s not exhaustive (I opted to leave most of the obstetric-specific information out), but hopefully it’s useful.

Since Last We Spoke 7-28-14

Today is my sweet kid’s 13th birthday, so I am officially the parent of a teenager. I have no idea how that happened. A minute ago she was a newborn and now she’s this funny, interesting, incredibly smart kid who makes me proud every day. Naturally we spent the weekend celebrating (ziplining and dim sum, anyone?) and gorging on homemade Hostess-type treats (my spouse whipped up Twinkies, Ho-Hos and Cupcakes complete with squiggly frosting). Pretty much the only thing I could do after the weekend calorie bombardment was to loll around last night and surf my social media sites. Which is what I did. Creating a Fee Schedule for Expert Consultation and Testimony

I frequently get asked about setting fees for expert consultation and testimony. Particularly with nurses, I find that people are unsure of how to determine appropriate rates and are prone to undervaluing their worth. So I figured I’d write something up for those of you needing some guidance. These are absolutely my opinions, not hard and fast rules. When I looked to see what had been written on fees for experts there was very little out there relevant to nursing specifically, and where it involved criminal (vs. malpractice) trials, there was even less. We don’t talk about it much (people are squeamish about things involving money), and really, we should. So I’ll kick off the conversation…

Here we go: vacation is behind us and a modified (but still busy) travel season resumes for our household. Happily it’s not me on the road this week, but after taking a week off, I can hardly corral my to-do list. Always a trade-off, that whole taking time off thing. Emergency Contraception After Rape

I had this article bookmarked to post when I returned, and coincidentally, my friend Linda Reimer just sent it out to the IAFN community today, so glad we’re all on the same page today. Medscape published an article last week, Emergency Contraception After Rape. It’s available for free, but registration for the site is required (also free). Since Last We Spoke: Sexual Assault on College Campuses

Who schedules the start of a brand new off-site project with a steep learning curve the day after she returns from vacation? This girl. So no prolonged post today. Just want to make sure you’ve seen some of the latest on campus sexual assault, including the White House Task Force report published last week, the associated resources at the NotAlone.gov site, and the substantial NY Times article in this Sunday’s paper, Fight Against Sexual Assault Holds Colleges to Account. Google campus sexual assault and you’ll find plenty that’s been written in the past week (including this Slate article, bookmarked for my metro ride tomorrow), but this is what I’ve been working my way through since last we spoke…still catching up post-Argentina.
